Highlights of the Texas Labor Force

The Texas unemployment rate increased by five-tenths of a percentage point in May 2009 to 6.9 percent. The five-year-average change in the April-to-May unemployment rate was an increase of two-tenths of a percentage point. The national unemployment rate mirrored Texas, increasing by five-tenths of a percentage point, for an unemployment rate of 9.1 percent. From year-ago levels, the unemployment rate for Texas increased 2.4 percentage points while the national unemployment rate rose 3.9 percentage points. The Texas unemployment rate has remained below the national unemployment rate for 23 months.
The Texas Civilian Labor Force for May 2009 reached a new record high in the time series with an estimate of 11,920,500, adding 47,100 people. The 15-year-average change seen in the April-to-May Civilian Labor Force was 12,300. From May 2008 to May 2009, the Civilian Labor Force expanded by 281,200 people, a change of 2.4 percent.
The number of employed Texans for May 2009 declined by 20,400 for an estimate of 11,098,500 persons. The 10-year-average change in the April-to-May number of employed was 10,600. Since January 2009, 120,900 Texans have been added to the employed population. From May 2008 to May 2009, the number of employed Texans declined by 21,700.
The number of unemployed individuals for May 2009 increased by 67,500 for an estimate of 822,000 Texans. This April-to-May increase in the number of unemployed was seen as the largest increase within the series. The May 2009 estimated unemployed level was seen as the third largest within the series. In the past 12 months, the number of unemployed increased by 302,900. Since January 2009, 25,500 Texans were added to the ranks of the unemployed.
The number of Texans filing for weekly unemployment insurance benefits rose 5,100 for a total of 249,000 in May 2009. This month’s unemployment insurance claims has increased in 18 Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs) and declined in seven MSAs. The McAllen-Edinburg-Mission MSA had the largest April-to-May decline in activity by 3.4 percent.
